There are so many things I like doing. It is difficult to single out just three. But if I am to call them hobbies, then, crocheting, writing, and it’s a toss-up between watching old black and white westerns and recordings of missed episodes of General Hospital.
Crocheting is soothing and relaxing for me. I can’t do any fancy designs. I can create nice warm blankets to wrap around you for watching TV. They take a while because I am a really busy person.
So, when I crochet, it helps take my mind off distracting or troubling things. Crocheting also allows me to watch either my westerns or catchup on the playback of General Hospital.
I grew up watching westerns. As they say, in my day, every channel had at least one western on seven days a week and that was the three main channels. In addition to those three stations, in Los Angeles, we also had four other channels and they showed westerns as well. In fact, there was not a day of the week that did not have westerns playing. The four additional channels showed westerns all day Saturday and Sunday’s.
Cheyenne and Gunsmoke were my favorites. I have no idea why I loved westerns so much. I tell people it’s because I was born in Texas. Westerns my favorite back then and I still enjoy watching them on the western Channel. When I watch westerns now, I am back in my mother’s living room sitting at the desk placed close to the television so I could reach over and switch between channels during the commercials. We didn’t have a remote. It was rare for someone to have a TV with a remote control. I know, I am dating myself.
My mother never understood how I could sit there and watch TV, do homework or read a book, and listen to the radio all at the same time. But I did and I understood what was happening in all three. Today, it is a little difficult for me to concentrate on three things going on at once.
And now, my third thing I like doing. I don’t just like writing, I discovered in the last few years, that I love writing. Sometimes, I get angry because I can’t spend the time just writing. Like reading, I am selective in what I write. I am enjoying this blogging. In fact, it has been a great help! The thirty-day challenge of what to write each day has been a wonderful help in making sure I write something every day. I don’t write to post each day, but I write something, even if it is only to prepare a list of what I need to do for the day. There is something magical about putting words on paper to tell a story you’ve created or share a personal side of yourself. I am angry with myself, because I allowed the actions of someone dictate my not even trying to do the one thing I get such satisfaction out of.
The only lesson I have learned from my hobbies, would be they relax me and take me on a journey away from the everyday world. I encourage you to find what takes away the stress of life for you. Set a time to enjoy whatever it is that works for you. For most people it’s taking a trip or getting together with friends, but for me, getting alone and doing what I love most is all I need to de-stress.
Well, that’s it for now. The next installment I will share what my favorite food is.
So, until next time, take care. lw
